We got this neat set of Usborne board books called Visual Perception Collection. Love me some board books. This sturdy design is easy to clean if they get dirty and they last a long time. These particular books are done in black, white, red, blue, yellow and purple. Using these colors makes a high contrast that is supposed to stimulate a baby’s mind. I am not sure if they really do because I am not a scientist but using just a couple different colors amongst the black and white makes the pictures quite striking. Our daughter is drawn to the parts of each picture that is brightly colored. Each page does not have very many words on them as well. So the child can look at the pictures more not that our daughter is reading the words yet anyway. One book is called Hello and the other is entitled Animals.
With Hello I try and see if she will do the same as in the pictures like jump when they are jumping, snuggle a teddy bear or come and get a hug. The Animals one shows of course a bunch of animals. So with this one I try and see if she can name the animals or make the sounds of the animals. Our daughter started talking when she was 6 months so she knows a lot of words and sounds already. Something that is really neat about both of these books is that they have a hole in each page. It makes it so that you can see onto the next page but it also makes it a little easier for young children to turn the page if they are having trouble with this. Something I would do with our oldest was ask if she could find certain animals in a book. When our youngest gets a little bit older I am going to try and see if she can find the various animals that are in this book. Another thing I like to do with books like this is use them for early math. You can have your child count the children or animals in the book when they are first learning to count.
I would recommend this book collection but I would not call them a must have. They would be great to add to your at home library though. The size is perfect for little hands to grasp and the holes on the pages make them easy for a baby to turn by themselves. The colors are engaging for young children and meant to help stimulate a baby’s brain. You can utilize them in more ways than just reading them a book. What books do you have for young children? Any good games you play with them like finding animals or counting?
I like the fact that the artist uses pops of color along with all the black and white contrast!
